Eugene Onegin - SI GOLD MEDAL
Cover design and illustrations by ©2012 Anna and Elena balbusso Twins Award-winning book "Eugene Onegin", a Russian novel in verse written by Alexander Pushkin, published by Folio Society uk in 2012. Alexander Pushkin is considered the central representative of The Age of Romanticism in Russian literature. The main protagonist is Eugene Onegin, a bored, selfish and world-weary cynic St. Petersburg dandy, whose life consists of balls, concerts, parties and nothing more. Onegin, who has taken over his uncle's estate in the country, spurns the love of the shy, bookish Tatyana Larina intensely drawn to Him. We wished to add a personal interpretation. We thought to represent the complex psychology of the protagonists with the symbols of nature: the Russian countryside, woods, winter, snow, fire. Tatiana is the fire of passion, love. She is the ideal of Russian Woman. Onegin is cold, melancholy, dark for his existential distress, for his inability to adapt to the real world. The book is admired for the artfulness of its verse narrative as well as for its exploration of life, death, love, ennui, convention and passion. The SI Society of Illustrators NYC has chosen our art "fire" for the cover of the Illustrators 55 Annual Book.
